Position Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and detail-oriented individual to join one of the most respected, award-winning brands in science media. Reporting to the Senior Media Sales Manager, the Publishing & Marketing Associate plays a vital role in the publishing organization for Science News Media Group (SNMG). The Associate provides hands-on logistical support, creativity and professionalism to the administration of a wide range of sales and marketing functions, as well as being the main point of contact for permissions, licensing and royalties related to SNMG content. In addition to the Senior Media Sales Manager, the Associate will work directly with other members of the publishing and editorial teams–including the Publisher–on the development and promotion of new products and services. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and results-oriented individual with excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. They should also have a good understanding of SNMG’s target audience and be able to adapt to changing market trends and organizational priorities.

This is a nonexempt position.

Job Responsibilities

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Customer service, order management (including invoicing) and logistics for Science News and Science News Explores advertising, including managing digital campaigns in our ad management system; prospecting/compiling ad sales leads; collaborating on drafting media kit, e-mail campaigns and marketing materials.
  • Customer service and order management (including invoicing) for Science News and Science News Explores content licensing and permissions.
  • Collaborating with the Publisher to proactively identify new potential content licensing opportunities.
  • Managing existing licensing agreements and issuing take-down notices to individuals found to be in violation of SNMG copyright.
  • Logistical support for ISEF College Fair, including prospecting/compiling exhibitor leads, developing exhibitor handbook, compiling exhibitor materials and providing pre-event and onsite support to exhibitors.
  • Collaborating with editorial, production, sales and marketing teams as needed.
  • Assisting with a wide range of other tasks and projects as assigned.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting.

This position is based in the Society’s offices located at 1719 N Street, NW, Washington DC. The candidate must reside in the metropolitan area of DC, MD, or VA.

Position Type and Expected Hours

  • This is a full-time, non-exempt position (37.5 hours per week). Our core hours are between 10 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET; flexible start and end time allowed upon supervisor approval, though availability for regularly scheduled meetings and unscheduled calls/meetings is required.

Required Education and Experience

  • BA degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Prior experience working for a media or publishing organization in a marketing or advertising sales role preferred.

Salary Range

  • $45,000 – $55,000; salary is commensurate with experience.
