Rules for All Projects
The International Rules and Guidelines for Science Fairs is
available in multiple formats.
Familiarity with the rules is critical for students, parents, teachers,
mentors, fair directors and local and affiliated fair Scientific
Review Committees (SRC) and Institutional Review Boards (IRB).
Hazardous chemicals, activities or devices
ISEF Rules: The following rules apply to research using hazardous chemicals, devices and activities. These include substances and devices that are regulated by local, state, country, or international law, most often with restrictions of their use by minors such as DEA-controlled substances, prescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives. Hazardous activities are those that involve a level of risk above and beyond that encountered in the student’s everyday life.

International rules for pre-college science research
The International Rules for Pre-college Science Research: Guidelines for Science and Engineering Fairs are published annually to support students doing independent research safely. The International Rules are the official rules of the Regeneron ISEF and students competing at Society-affiliated science fairs.
Science Talent Search: Judging and Awards
Regeneron STS applications are first checked for eligibility, including meeting the Application Deadline, qualifying as a contestant, and submitting independent and original work. Eligible Regeneron STS entrants are then evaluated and scored by three Ph.D. level scientists. Each qualified project is scored based upon the online application questions, the Research Report, and the overall scientific potential of the student.
