2021 Annual Report: Regeneron ISEF

Annual Report 2021: ISEF

Nearly 2,000 young scientists, engineers and innovators from 49 states and 64 countries participated in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair’s first virtual competition. Finalists participated in virtual judging, watched streamed programming and had fun in a virtual world created just for them.

In a year full of uncertainty, virtual Regeneron ISEF 2021 saw student scientists around the globe inspired to help make the world a better place through science, technology, engineering and math. This year’s fair enabled finalists and the general public around the world to connect with top scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and, of course, each other.

Meet This Year’s Top Winners

Michelle Hua, Cranbrook Kingswood School, MI, USA, ISEF 2021

Michelle Hua

Michelle Hua won first place for her development of an artificial intelligence-based algorithm used for human action recognition. She received the $75,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award, named in honor of the pioneering drug discoverer and Regeneron co-founder, who is currently Regeneron’s President and Chief Scientific Officer. Using human silhouettes, she designed and implemented a novel deep learning framework that outperforms all similar state-of-the-art algorithms.

Catherine Kim, winner of the 2021 Regeneron Young Scientist Award, ISEF

Catherine Kim

Catherine Kim received one of two Regeneron Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 for creating a novel hierarchical machine learning model that is able to predict adverse drug reactions with 91% accuracy, along with their underlying biological mechanisms.

Meet Daniel Shen, winner of the 2021 Regeneron Young Scientist Award

Daniel Shen

Daniel Shen also received the Regeneron Young Scientist Award of $50,000 for his development of an AI-powered facial-cue control module. Its high speed accelerates scientific discoveries, medicine research and many other fields driven by large amounts of temporal data. The new algorithm has been adopted by researchers in sepsis shock diagnosis and hurricane predictions.

Top Winner Michelle Hua's Favorite ISEF Memory

“My favorite memory from virtual ISEF was watching the virtual Grand Award Ceremony because all the ISEF finalists from Michigan gathered for the first time in person at a movie theater to watch it. Everyone was extremely supportive of each other.”

Michelle Hua won the top award in Regeneron ISEF 2021. She is a rhythmic gymnast.

Why I Volunteer

Giving Voice to Young Innovators

“I volunteer at ISEF to help international students from Spanish-speaking countries explain their projects in front of the judges. Most of the international students are visiting the United States for the first time. For some, it’s their first international trip. The enthusiasm, joy and desire to share their projects is contagious, and perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of volunteering is serving as a bridge of communication.”

Edna Santizo
ISEF Spanish Language Interpreter

Edna is a Court Certified Interpreter with the California Judicial Council, a Conference and Community Interpreter, and a translator. She has been a member of the American Translators Association and its Spanish Language Division since 2010 and has volunteered at ISEF since 2014.
