An inside look at the 2016 Broadcom MASTERS semifinalists

Earlier this summer, 2,343 Broadcom MASTERS entrants submitted applications to the national middle school science and engineering competition. The Society congratulates the entrants for their impressive and innovative research projects. From the entrant pool, the top 300 semifinalists were named.

Here are some fun facts about the 300 semifinalists this year:

  • 212 semifinalists are competing for the first time, while 88 are returning to the competition
  • There are more women (161) than men (139) competing this year
  • There are 279 individual projects and 21 team projects this year
  • 262 participate in sports, including basketball, dance, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and track
  • 254 play a musical instrument, including cello, flute, guitar, piano, and violin
  • 219 give back through community service
  • 114 build tech in their robotics classes or clubs
  • 109 semifinalists participate in their school’s science or math Olympiad
  • 90 hold positions on their student council
  • 89 participate in science club
  • 87 are involved in Scouts or 4H organizations
  • 78 get creative in their art clubs
  • 58 participate in computer club
  • 52 were nominated to participate by more than one fair
  • 52 conducted their projects in labs
  • 50 participate in their school publications
  • 41 compete in the National Science Bowl
  • The semifinalists are from 37 states and attend 195 public schools, 71 private schools, 21 charter schools, while 11 are homeschooled
