Science News Releases 90th Anniversary Edition

Published since 1922, Science News celebrates 90 years of comprehensive science coverage for the public

Science News, published by Society for Science & the Public (SSP), released its 90th anniversary issue this week. The March 24 issue includes a special anniversary section highlighting some of the most noteworthy scientific discoveries and events reported in the magazine over the last nine decades.

Science News dates to 1922, when Society for Science & the Public, then Science Service, launched Science News-Letter. It quickly grew into a valued source of science news for newspapers, libraries, schools, and individuals. The magazine reported on the early days of atomic energy, the development of modern genetics, the “Scopes Monkey Trial,” and many other scientific and technological developments of the 20th century.

“Since mimeographed sheets of science news articles were first distributed as the Science News- Letter in March 1922, our writers and editors have been embedded in the scientific process,” said Tom Siegfried, editor in chief of Science News. “Throughout all these years, we’ve reported nearly every major step in the progress of science. Thousands of people interested in what scientists are doing have kept themselves up to date by perusing our pages.”

Science News offers readers concise, current, and comprehensive coverage of news from across scientific disciplines. The biweekly print publication reaches more than 120,000 dedicated subscribers, with a regular readership of more than 265,000. In each edition, readers will find articles on new discoveries and developments in various fields exploring the frontiers of research and important issues involving science and technology.

Online, Science News delivers new content daily at www.sciencenews.org, attracting nearly 10 million visits annually. Science News also produces the weekly e-publication Science News Prime, available for the iPad, and the magazine is a popular publication on the Kindle.

The anniversary issue will be available at limited newsstands across the county on March 27. The full digital edition of the magazine is available online to subscribers now. The special anniversary retrospective section will be available free online to all interested individuals at www.sciencenews.org/90.
