Fun facts about the 2024 Thermo Fisher JIC Top 30 finalists
As we near Finals Week of the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, we are excited to welcome the Top 30 finalists to Washington, D.C. for a one-of-a-kind experience of team building, STEM learning and, of course, sharing their original research. While it’s true that these Junior Innovators are among the brightest young minds in the country, that only begins to capture the energy and diverse talents that define this cohort. Here are a few fun facts showing just how passionate and well-rounded this year’s Top 30 finalists are:
- 18 are actively involved in community service.
- One is on their town’s local sustainability council.
- 21 are in choir or play a musical instrument, such as piano, violin, cello, trumpet, flute or trombone.
- One finalist won funding for a project to install bike racks in their community shopping center.
- 22 are involved in Science/Math Olympiad or a science club.
- 21 play sports, including soccer, golf, martial arts, basketball, swimming, lacrosse, tennis, dance, skiing, equestrian riding and table tennis.
- 20 study a foreign language.
- One finalist participates in their local Young Marines organization, another in their local Youth Conservation Program helping to clean beaches, trails and parks.
- The finalists aspire to diverse careers, ranging from aeronautical engineering to physics to environmental engineering, medicine, biomedical  innovation, veterinary science, biochemistry, materials discovery, mechanical engineer and biology.
