Regional STEM Research Fellows Program

Society for Science’s Regional STEM Research Fellows Programs help educators bring authentic STEM learning and research to students in rural, tribal, and other communities where opportunities and resources may be limited.

Fellows join locally led, year-long cohorts that combine professional learning, peer collaboration, and practical support with resources and incentives, such as Science News Learning program access, STEM Research Grant kits or funding, outreach funding, stipends, and the opportunity to earn graduate school credit. Together, these supports equip teachers to incorporate research and experimental design into their classrooms and create pathways for students to participate in science fairs and STEM competitions.

Educator Cohort Professional Learning Model

The STEM Research Fellow programs use a proven, year-long, peer-led professional learning model adapted from the Advocates Program and tested regionally with Rural Arizona STEM Fellows. Each cohort is guided by a regional Ambassador and Lead Fellows who understand the local strengths, needs, and challenges while Fellows connect with local STEM partners to expand place-based research opportunities. Educator cohorts set goals, solve shared problems, strengthen classroom practices, and connect with state and national networks. By reducing isolation and building lasting relationships, the program creates sustainable local capacity and expands students’ access to meaningful, project-based STEM experiences.

Scientists to Classrooms Program

The Scientists to Classrooms program gives students the opportunity to meet inspiring role models, engage with real-world science, and explore potential STEM careers. During each visit, scientists connect their work to what students are learning in class, lead a discussion of a Science News or Science News Explores article related to their field, and highlight how that knowledge can be applied to future STEM pathways.

In partnership with Regeneron, the program grew from 16 scientists visiting 13 schools and reaching about 600 students in 2024 to 52 schools and approximately 2,600 students in 2026. To date, the Regeneron Scientists to Classrooms program has connected nearly 5,300 students with STEM role models to inspire and empower the next generation of scientists and leaders.
