Society for Science & the Public Receives $120 Million Investment to Further Science Programming
Intel to Support Nonprofit’s Legacy of Advancing Science and Math with 10-year Commitment
WASHINGTON, D.C.
One of the nation’s oldest non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing public engagement in scientific research and education, Society for Science & the Public (Society), announced Intel will invest $120 million into its prestigious science and math competitions over the next decade. The announcement was made at the U.S. News & World Report Education Summit at the National Press Club, where leaders issued a challenge to the nation to encourage participation in science programs such as the Intel Science Talent Search (STS) and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
Established in 1921 by E.W. Scripps and William Ritter to introduce science content to the pages of the nation’s news outlets, the Society has been committed to advancing the public’s interest and engagement in science for nearly 90 years. As the publisher of Science News, and owner and administrator of a national middle school science competition and the two Intel-sponsored high-school level competitions, each year, the Society reaches hundreds of thousands of science enthusiasts of all ages.
“Intel and the Intel Foundation’s stunning investment validates the work the Society engages in every day as we pursue our mission to inform, educate, and inspire individuals through the fields of science and math. A commitment of this magnitude illustrates a tremendous confidence in our organization. Intel shares our promise to make a lasting impression on the world’s brightest young minds,” said Elizabeth Marincola, president of Society for Science & the Public. “As our partner for more than a decade, Intel has helped the Society expand our programs and our historical mandate to engage the public on math and science. This renewed investment allows us to continue this progress over the next ten years.”
This investment furthers Intel’s commitment to the Intel STS and Intel ISEF programs, and enables the Society to launch a new outreach program to widen the reach and impact of its science competitions. Additionally, the Society will establish an alumni and membership program uniting the over six decades of past ISEF and STS participants to serve as mentors to the next generation of young scientists.
Intel has sponsored the Science Talent Search since 1998 and the International Science and Engineering Fair since 1996. These programs are widely regarded as the world’s leading pre-college science competitions, annually drawing the interest of thousands of students from around the world. In the Intel ISEF, Intel STS and the Society Middle School Program, students compete for millions of dollars in scholarships and prizes by presenting original science and mathematical research and application. Competitors in Society programs have gone on to win the world’s leading science and mathematics accolades, including the Nobel Prize, The Fields Medal and the National Medal of Science.
