Society for Science launches new magazine for young readers
Science News for Students Rebrands as Science News Explores
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Society for Science today announced the launch of Science News Explores, a new print magazine for children ages 9 and up and their families, teachers and community. The Society is also changing the name of Science News for Students’ website, which is written at a middle-school level, to Science News Explores.
“Science News Explores will be continuing the 100-year tradition of Science News, exploring discoveries across science, technology, health and medicine,” said Nancy Shute, Science News Editor in Chief. “The Science News Explores website will provide the same excellent, evidenced-based reporting that it had as Science News for Students – just with a new name.”
Science News Explores is an award-winning digital and print magazine dedicated to providing topical stories on current events in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for children, their families and educators. The stories in Science News Explores are reported by experienced science journalists, many with Ph.D.s in the fields they cover. Science News Explores publishes short news stories as well as longer features, all written with a vocabulary and sentence structure that’s engaging and accessible to readers at many levels.
The new print magazine continues this tradition, bringing readers fascinating facts, astonishing photos, exciting stories and fun experiments in 10 issues published throughout the year.
“While conventional wisdom bet against launching a print magazine in the digital age, we believe a magazine that takes young people away from their screens and provides an opportunity for caregivers and educators to read about discoveries with the children in their lives is vitally important,” commented Maya Ajmera, President and CEO of Society for Science and Publisher of Science News. “We also know that not every child has access to high-speed Internet. Through this magazine, we can bridge the digital divide and expand access to scientific learning.”
