Grifols Foundation Provides Awards for First Time at Intel ISEF 2014

The Victor Grifols Foundation will offer a Special Award for the first time at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2014. Answers were provided by the Victor Grifols Foundation.

Tell us about your organization and why it chose to offer a special award at Intel ISEF:

The Víctor Grífols i Lucas Foundation was created in 1998 with the mission of promoting bioethics through dialogue between specialists in a range of areas. The Foundation seeks to foster ethical attitudes in organizations, companies and individuals active in the field of human health. To achieve this, it offers a discussion platform which provides a forum for the exchange of different perspectives on ethics.

To carry out our mission, the Foundation strives to promote research in specific areas of bioethics by awarding grants and prizes. By offering a special award at the Intel ISEF 2014, the Foundation hopes to spur the brightest young minds in science to contribute to a deeper understanding of bioethics.

What award(s) do you offer?

Intel ISEF 2014 will be the first year the Grifols Foundation has offered awards. We are thrilled to offer our science and ethics award. We plan to recognize work that reflects scientific excellence coupled with consideration of the ethical impact on society.

What impact do you think you, as an organization that provides awards and as judges, have on students interested in scientific research?

We hope to build awareness about the importance of ethics in scientific research. All research projects pose a number of ethical questions that must be addressed. This ethical dimension of research needs to be explored by students and scientists in society.

What areas of science does your organization focus on?

We focus on bioethics: ethics related to medical sciences. This year the Foundation broadened its focus to include sustainable development, biodiversity, genomics and other areas of emerging technologies with substantial ethical dilemmas.

Tell us about other ways Grifols Foundation will support Intel ISEF 2014:

Along with our exhibit in the Expo Hall, the Foundation will offer a tour and luncheon for fifteen students on Friday, May 16 at noon. The tour is open to all Intel ISEF participants and will be offered first-come, first-served to students who sign up for the tour at registration. The tour includes a guided tour of Grifols Valley Manufacturing Plant in Pasadena and the Grifols Museum. Students will be able to see the production process of plasma products and learn about our history.
