70 Years of the Science Talent Search
While the Intel STS 2011 finalists are enjoying their week in D.C., you can browse through pictures and facts about all the previous Science Talent Searches, those sponsored by Westinghouse and, since 1998, Intel, from 1942 to 2010. Building on the 70th year of the program, and with grant support from the Intel Foundation, the Society for Science & the Public is excited to launch an online historical perspective and photo archive.
These new historical pages hold information about each competition, such as the winners, keynote speakers, and the fact that, for a few years, girls and boys competed separately.
The photos from each year span American history and culture, with styles changing over the decades and photos that include Eleanor Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush, and Barack Obama, to name a few. Many of the pages also include alumnus updates. For instance, visitors can read about Steven Berry and Barbara Searle Wolff from 1948, Virginia Davis and Jerry McAlwee from 1986, and many more. We hope you will enjoy this glimpse into our history.
If you are an alumni, we encourage you to stay involved or reconnect with the Society.
