Society for Science & the Public Selects 200 Science Teachers for the 2017 Research Teachers Conference

WASHINGTON, DC – The Society for Science & the Public is excited to announce the selection of 200 science research teachers to attend the 2017 Research Teachers Conference in Washington, D.C. from October 13-15, 2017.

The teachers, selected via lottery, will receive an all-expenses paid weekend to share best practices, troubleshoot challenges that may arise in supporting students in independent science research and learn more about the Society and the Regeneron Science Talent Search.

The conference will address topics such as completing research in a high school lab, finding and placing students in summer programs, obtaining pre-approval for projects relating to humans and animals, combating plagiarism and reaching underserved students.

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to provide this valuable experience for science research teachers,” said Maya Ajmera, President and CEO of the Society for Science & the Public and Publisher of Science News. “The Research Teachers Conference provides attendees with the knowledge they need to support students of all backgrounds in pursuing scientific research along with a network of teachers who they can tap for advice and new ideas.”

This year’s participants represent 46 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Of the 200 teachers selected to attend the conference via lottery, one third are veterans with significant experience teaching research, one third are teachers with some experience teaching research and one third have no experience but are interested in teaching science research.

Interest in the Research Teachers Conference more than doubled from previous years, with 1,190 teachers signing up for the lottery, compared to 500 in each of the past two years. All 200 selected are from schools who have never had an educator attend the conference, and no school has more than one representative.

At the conference, sponsored by Regeneron, teachers will also learn about the Regeneron Science Talent Search. This competition, founded and produced by the Society, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.
