Society donates Science News to 7 Washington, DC high schools

Society for Science & the Public held its first-ever end of the year campaign in 2016. Society staff members raised a total of $3,500, which allowed us to bring the Science News in High Schools program to seven schools in the Washington, DC area, including: Ballou High School, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC), Eastern High School, H.D. Woodson Senior High School, McKinley Technology High School, and Wilson High School.

CHEC Principal Maria Tukeva wrote, “Thank you so much for this resource, which will increase our ability to make Common Core-aligned reading and writing an integral part of our Science courses.”

The Society launched the Science News in High Schools program in September 2015, as part of a larger commitment to create a more scientifically literate society. The program’s goal is to transform how students and educators are asked to interact with science in the classroom by providing them with real-world examples and information.

You can sponsor an entire school for the Science News in High Schools program for $500. This contribution will provide:

  • Delivery of 10 print copies to each high school, addressed to science teachers and librarians.
  • Login access for entire high school to the Science News website.

  • An online teacher’s guide with discussion questions for each issue, to help teachers incorporate the content into their lesson plans and curriculum.
