Advice from Regeneron Science Talent Search Alumni: Why You Should Apply

The Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) 2026 application is officially open! Each year, America’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition invites high school seniors to present their original research and share their thirst for scientific discovery.
If you’re unsure about applying, you’re not alone. Many past finalists once wondered if they were ready and if it would be worth the work.
Today, they all same the same thing now. Just go for it!
Kevin Shen, who came in seventh place last year, won a $70,000 award for a project on improving fuel efficiency by building a 3D-printed airplane with oblique wings. His oblique-wing aircraft and flight computer improved flight efficiency by 9.2%. Even with such impressive results, he spent months wondering if he should apply. “I even ended up deciding not to. It was only when a previous finalist convinced me to apply at the last minute that I gave it a shot, and it was likely the most ‘worth-it’ decision I’ve ever made,” said Kevin Shen. “You only have one chance to experience STS, so don’t regret not applying!”
A common theme among STS finalists is to let your true passions come through both your work and application. “Pick a project that truly excites you; something you can’t stop talking about. Show your personality in your essays, and don’t be afraid to let your curiosity and enthusiasm shine,” said Charlotte Rosario.
Others stressed persistence, planning as well as storytelling. “Scientific research is hard. My journey was filled with failure, but persistence, curiosity and an open mind will push you through,” said Minghao Zou. “Make your research sound like a story, because it is!” added Siddharth Nirgudkar. “Talk about the challenges, the days when you struggled, the days when you suddenly got a new idea, and the days you finally got the results!”
Above all, finalists encourage applicants to be confident and believe in the power of their work. “Submit your research whether you think it will be recognized or not,” said Vishwum Kapadia. “Most likely, your ideas and discoveries are relevant and impactful, and the application experience will make you a stronger person in the long run.”

- Charlotte Rosario: “My advice? Pick a project that truly excites you; something you can’t stop talking about. Show your personality in your essays, and don’t be afraid to let your curiosity and enthusiasm shine. Also, start early. You’ll thank yourself later!”
- Minghao Zou: “To future applicants, my suggestion is to be rigorous and have integrity in the research process: double, triple check and cross-reference various literatures. Scientific research is hard. My journey was filled with failures, but persistence, curiosity and an open mind has, and will, push you through these obstacles. During the application process, just showcase all the hard work you have put into your research, and demonstrate your passion for it.”
- Chloe Lee: “My main advice is to plan ahead. Writing the paper took much longer than I expected, even though I had all the needed data. Give yourself ample time to also reflect on your work and keep documentation throughout the research process. Good documentation will be helpful when detailing your timeline and methodology in the application.”
- Elisa Zhang: “My biggest piece of advice for future Regeneron STS applicants is to reflect deeply on not just the “what,” but also the “why.” It’s easy to get caught up in the technical details of the research, but keep in mind that the value of research lies in its impact. Whether paving a new research direction or adding meaningful insights to existing approaches and findings, make sure to clearly explain the significance of the work and results.”
- Logan Lee: “Be yourself! In your application, talk about the things that you care about, love doing and are proud of.”
- Addison Shea: “To those applying, I would advise you to stay curious! Use your interest in your topic as an asset. Learn as much as you can about your discipline and convey that passion in your application.”
- Angeline Zhao: “Regeneron STS is a competition that focuses not only on your research project, but on your potential as a scientist and a leader. It has been so inspirational for me as I consider my own future. My tips are to not feel overwhelmed by everything you need to fill out and answer. Society for Science is just trying to get a better sense of your project, so be proud of everything you’ve done and be excited to share it with someone new!”
