2013 Year in Review

As we start the new year, we’d like to share some of our most notable accomplishments from 2013, made possible by supporters and friends like you:

1. Martin Karplus, an alumnus of the 1947 Science Talent Search, is awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Karplus is the eighth Science Talent Search alumni to be awarded a Nobel.
2. Launching our new website integrating our Science News family of publications with our vaunted educational competitions and additional resources in a more user-friendly and responsive design.
3. Ionut Budisteanu, top winner of Intel ISEF 2013, was named one of Time Magazine’s “16 Most Influential Teens of 2013” for his work on designing a low-cost, self-driving car.
4. Becoming one of only 6% of charities rated who have received four consecutive 4-star evaluations from Charity Navigator for our financial health, accountability, and transparency and being named a “Top Nonprofit” by Great Nonprofits based on the large number of positive reviews SSP received from alumni, volunteers, donors, and subscribers.
5. Hosting two new competitions –The Future: Powered by Fiction, a science fiction competition for ages 13-25 in conjunction with the Tomorrow Project, Arizona State University, and the Intel Foundation; and Science, Play, and Research Kit (SPARK): Reimagining the Chemistry Set of the 21st Century with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
6. Providing more than $4 million in awards to students, educators, and schools to recognize, support, and encourage hands-on learning and science fair participation through our Intel Science Talent Search, Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and Broadcom MASTERS educational competitions.
7. Reporting on recent scientific news and advances for both adult and student audiences through our award-winning Science News and freely accessible Science News for Students (previously known as Science News for Kids) publications.
8. Connecting with more than one million supporters through our social media channels, allowing a mobile and technologically-savvy audience to easily access information about SSP and Science News.
9. Receiving an Eddie Award from Folio: Magazine for Best Single Article. “No New Meds” was featured in the February 23, 2013 issue of Science News. Science News was also a finalist for Best Online News Coverage and Best Full Issue.
10. Earning the support and interest of thousands of alumni, subscribing members, and other science enthusiasts who invest in the work of the Society as donors and members.
