Hayley Bay Barna is a Partner at First Round Capital based in New York. Prior to joining First Round she co-founded and scaled Birchbox, the leading beauty and grooming retailer seed funded by First Round in 2010. Since joining First Round in 2016, Barna has led investments across many industries and business models including healthcare (Alma, Thirty Madison), consumer (Clare, Collective Retreats), tech-enabled hardware (Mirror, Caper) and marketplaces (Anvyl, Crowd Justice) among others. She focuses on New York based companies.

Barna is passionate about increasing the diversity of the venture ecosystem. She is a member of the executive committee of All Raise, an organization committed to accelerating the success of female founders and funders.

Before launching Birchbox in 2010, Barna received her MBA from Harvard Business School. She started her career as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company in New York. She also spent time at two very different ends of the retail spectrum through her roles in strategy at the auction house Christie’s in Hong Kong and product management at Amazon in Seattle, Washington.

Barna has been recognized as Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business, Fortune’s 40 Under 40 and Ad Age’s Women to Watch, among other honors. She is a board member at Collective Retreats, RAB Lighting and Madison Reed, and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees at Society for Science.

Barna is an alumna of the 2001 Science Talent Search.

She joined the Society’s Board of Trustees in 2016.
