Features Editor

Science News, the award-winning print and digital magazine published by the Society for Science & the Public in Washington, DC, has an immediate opening for an experienced features editor.

The features editor is primarily responsible for editing feature articles and weekly columns and overseeing their production for the Science News website, biweekly magazine and the tablet publication. The position requires working with other editors, staff reporters and freelance writers to develop ideas for feature stories across a range of scientific disciplines. The features editor works closely with writers on the direction, scope and tone of these stories, with attention to each writer’s interests and strengths. The editor is also responsible for locating source art and working with the design and production team to conceptualize and create art and graphics that convey key content, reviewing coverage in competing news outlets and scientific journals, and maintaining a big-picture understanding of how each week’s features fit into the overall issue and an awareness of the breadth and scope of coverage from issue to issue. With the editor in chief and managing editor, the features editor will help generate ideas for special issues and oversee their progress.

Major responsibilities include:

-Research and refining of new feature ideas in coordination with editors and writers

-Work with writers during reporting and writing of features

-Manage feature schedule, in coordination with the rest of the team

-Edit features for content, clarity, grammar and style

-Write headlines, decks and captions

-Research, develop and edit art and infographics for features. This may require original reporting and/or a search of the scientific literature

-Oversee feature articles through entire production process, from art ideas to final

-Evaluate issues raised in fact checks, which may require reading original scientific literature and/or original reporting

-Proofread tablet and magazine pages and assisting with other editing tasks as needed.

The ideal candidate will have superior editing skills and extensive experience working with artists to develop information graphics that communicate scientific concepts accurately. Ability to engage deeply with scientific content, to guide writer and illustrators to communicate ideas clearly. Evidence of established relationships with reliable freelance contributors is highly desirable. Science journalism experience and a science background are required, and the ability to work collegially in a fast-paced environment with a small editing team and a talented staff of writers and freelancers is essential. Critical qualities for this job include the ability to set and meet regular deadlines, honed organizational skills and a highly tuned attention to detail.
