Robert Shaw recently retired as founder and president of Aretê Corporation, a venture capital management firm investing in small-scale alternative energy systems. From 1987-2011, he served as managing partner of seven venture funds focused on energy-related technologies, and as advisor to several other alternative energy venture funds.
Prior to forming Aretê, he was a senior vice president and a member of the board of directors of Booz, Allen & Hamilton, where he was a founder of the firm’s energy division. Earlier in his career, he conducted solid state physics research at Bell Laboratories and at the Cavendish Laboratory in the U.K., where he was an Air Force Office of Scientific Research postdoctoral fellow.
Dr. Shaw served as chairman of Distributed Energy Systems Corp from 1996-2007, and of Evergreen Solar, Inc. from 1994–2005. He has also served on numerous other corporate boards, National Academy committees, and as member and chair of the Cornell University Engineering College Council. Dr. Shaw was a member of the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Technology Advisory Committee for nine years, and served several years as its vice chair and chair.
He received a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University, and MSEE and BEP degrees from Cornell University, and an MPA in Organization Design and Development from American University.Dr. Shaw joined the SSP Board of Trustees in 2008.
