The Manager of Institutional Giving is a position established to grow the Society for Science & the Public’s giving from institutional and family foundations as well as corporate foundations. The Manager of Institutional Giving will work within the Advancement department under the Chief Advancement Officer. We are searching for a highly motivated individual who has foundation fundraising experience coupled with persistence and willingness to think outside the box.
The Society for Science & the Public is well-known for our award-winning magazine, Science News, and our world class science research competitions: Regeneron Science Talent Search, Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Broadcom MASTERS. Most recently, and for the past five years, we have focused on building our portfolio of Outreach and Equity programs: Science News in High Schools, Advocate Program, Research Teachers Conferences, STEM Research Grants and STEM Action Grants. Our efforts in this area are already impacting millions of students at thousands of schools and education programs in all 50 states and globally. We hope to meet the significant demand to increase these programs through additional institutional giving support.
This position will be responsible for developing productive relationships with institutional supporters to support our programming.
- Work with the Chief Advancement Officer, President & CEO and Institutional Giving team to develop financially productive relationships among institutional giving prospects and Society leadership.
- Develop and maintain a portfolio of more than 100 top institutional giving prospects, sponsors, and grant makers, with an emphasis on institutional and family foundations.
- Write effective grant materials, proposals, case statements, presentations, conceptual plans, letters of inquiry, acknowledgement letters, progress and stewardship reports and other institutional giving communications in a timely manner.
- Execute an annual development plan focused on expanding institutional grants for key Society priorities.
- Identify potential institutional giving prospects based on program areas and geographical regions.
- Experience securing funding (6-figure plus) from foundations and other institutional giving partners.
- Excellent and effective communication skills, especially in regards to presentation development, proposal writing and reporting.
- Excellent attention to detail and high standard of work output.
- A high level of professionalism and time management skills.
- Proficiency in fundraising software, Raiser’s Edge is preferred, and related computer skills to include Microsoft Office tools.
- A Flexible, collaborative and collegial work style.
- Ability to handle confidential information with care.
- Understanding and affinity for the core values of the Society.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting.
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Position Type and Expected Hours
- This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Up to 20 percent travel is required to attend the Society’s science competition and events and to meet with institutional donors as necessary.
Required Education and Experience
- 4-5 years’ experience in development/fundraising or similar atmosphere.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
