Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff will serve as a key member of the Society’s senior leadership team. This position reports to the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The Chief of Staff is responsible for working cross-functionally with all senior leadership along with key external partners to help ensure the successful oversight of the Society’s annual operational plan and goals; serve as a staff liaison to the Board of Trustees and Honorary Board; support high level fundraising relationships of key interest to the President & CEO; and assist the President & CEO with related management initiatives. The Chief of Staff will work closely with the leadership team on behalf of the President & CEO to plan key special projects and ensure that high-priority initiatives are executed effectively. As a trusted advisor to the President & CEO, the Chief of Staff must be highly resourceful and demonstrate strong emotional intelligence, self-motivation, detail orientation, strategic capacity and analytical skills.


Oversight of Annual Operating Plan and Long-Term Strategic Plan Results and Tracking

  • Lead the agenda setting and structural development of Senior Team Quarterly Progress Meetings, regular Chiefs meetings (currently monthly) and Senior Team meetings. 
  • Oversee and track results for the Society’s Annual Operating Plan.
  • Support departmental goal tracking through the creation/maintenance of data dashboards. 
  • Support long-term strategic planning and tracking of related results with the President & CEO and COO.

Liaison to the Board of Trustees and Honorary Board

  • Support the President & CEO in Board management.
  • Strategic innovator on Board work, making improvements to processes over time. 
  • For meetings of the Board of Trustees, manage the development of Board books with the President & CEO’s Executive Assistant and co-develop the meeting agendas with the President & CEO.
  • Ensure the successful completion of the monthly and quarterly Board reports with the President & CEO’s Executive Assistant.    
  • Facilitate communication with the Board, especially regarding committee work, including working with the President & CEO on agendas and all material development for the Governance Committee. 
  • Lead any updates to the Society’s bylaws in coordination with the Society’s President & CEO, Governance Committee and Counsel.
  • Manage with the President & CEO the recruitment and nominations of future Board members including completing research, providing recommendations, and drafting bios.
  • Lead communications with the Honorary Board. 

Executive Function

  • Lead the agenda and structure of the Executive Team meetings and develop President & CEO talking points for Society All Staff meetings. 
  • Ensure Executive Team is represented in Society internal newsletter. 
  • Support key relationships that the President & CEO is building by researching importance, tracking next steps and attending key meetings and phone calls.
  • Represent the Society externally especially regarding public policy activities.
  • Support the development of new Society partnerships. 
  • Draft correspondence for the President & CEO. 

High Level Fundraising

  • Point of contact for high level fundraising activities of special interest to the President & CEO.
  • Support the President & CEO in donor stewardship and selection related to the Society’s title sponsorships, as needed. 

Special Projects

  • Oversee, manage, and direct special projects on behalf of the President & CEO.
  • Support large scale cross-department projects. 
  • Supervise external consultants assigned to special projects, as needed.

Qualification Requirements

The right candidate has a proven track record of success enabling leadership and managing teams towards their goals.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree preferred. 
  • Experience in the education, science and/or non-profit sectors. 
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience, including a least 2 years at the Director level or above. Previous experience as a Chief of Staff is preferred.
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors. 
  • Strong drive, dedication, and work ethic.
  • Entrepreneurial with a self-starting personality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with care. 
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and drive results.
  • Excellent and effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Understanding and affinity for the core values of the Society.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works in an office setting. Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. Due to the pandemic, the Society is operating on a hybrid work model until December 30, 2022. 

Position Type and Expected Hours

This is a full-time, exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Travel for this position is at a maximum of 15% throughout the year.
