Advancement Specialist
The Advancement Specialist is an integral member of the Advancement Department and executes a full range of operational and administrative activities to effectively support the organization’s fundraising and engagement goals.
We value strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to contribute to a fast-paced environment as an individual and as part of a team. This position will report to the Director of Advancement Operations.
This is a non-exempt position.
To perform the job successfully, the candidate should be able to demonstrate:
- Experience using fundraising/donor database software to manage information, generate lists and provide support to front-line fundraisers.
- In collaboration with the Director of Advancement Operations, develops and streamlines processes to increase the efficiency and accuracy of gift processing, financial reconciliation with the Accounting team, and development workflows.
- One year of experience providing support to fundraisers that includes familiarity with data management and data gathering, writing/editing a variety of fundraising materials, and providing logistical support for fundraising events and outreach within an advancement operation in a complex organization.
- Superior communication skills, both oral and written, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with data management and data gathering.
- High attention to detail and demonstrated proactive approach to daily tasks.
- Demonstrated affinity for the mission of the Society for Science.
Responsibilities
- Leads logistical needs for advancement outreach and engagement, including development of letters,background materials, cultivational outreach, and solicitations as requested.
- Oversees the acknowledgment process and ensures the accuracy of donor recognition data.
- Manages and tracks stewardship of donors and benefit fulfillment, including preparing reports to provide updates on program accomplishments and accounting of funds.
- Aids the advancement team in internal processes and maintains accurate and complete records of a variety of fundraising activities.
- Creates departmental resources and maintains a repository of materials for the team.
- Organizes and leads the Society’s State Giving Campaign application process.
- Provides support for advancement events, meetings, and other activities at the Society.
- Participates in planning sessions and helps coordinate logistics, donor management, materials, and other elements needed for a successful event.
Qualifications
- Proficiency working with a CRM, ideally Microsoft Dynamics
- Excellent written, analytical, problem-solving, and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
- Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Motivated, self-directed, and results-oriented, and possess a desire for quality
- Affinity for the mission of the Society for Science
- Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to develop rapport with colleagues and external clients
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works in an office setting. Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. The Society is operating on a hybrid schedule.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Position Type and Expected Hours
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Light travel for some of the organization’s events is necessary in this position.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from a College or University and one to three years of related experience
Salary Range
$55,000 – $65,000; salary is commensurate with experience.
