The Process

Intel STS 2007 Finalists meet with U.S. Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney.  The Intel STS is a program of the Society for Science & the Public.

Start Early!

The deadline is 8:00 p.m. ET, November 19, 2008.

You should complete your Entry Form as soon as possible and start writing your Research Report at once, if you have not begun or already completed this requirement.

What to Include With Your Entry

The following items must be included with your entry or mailed separately so that they arrive by the deadline (8:00 p.m. ET, November 19, 2008). Please request these items early in consideration of the time constraints on your teacher or advisor.

  • Ask your teacher or advisor to complete Part III of the Entry Form.
  • If you did any portion of your research in a scientist's laboratory, submit Entry Form Part II to the scientist for completion. Review your project for required Supplemental Form submission.
  • Request your official high school transcript from the guidance department and submit Entry Form Part IV to the guidance department for completion and principal's signature.

Where to Mail Your Entry

Assemble the application and mail it to:

Intel Science Talent Search
Society for Science & the Public
1719 N Street, N.W.
Washington, DC 20036

Entries must be received by 8:00 p.m. ET on November 19, 2008.

The Selection Process

After checking paperwork for completeness and accuracy, entries are evaluated and judged by professionals in many scientific disciplines.

All Project Reports are read; all Entry Forms, transcripts and standardized test scores are reviewed and checked.

The selection process consists of:

  • Project Report evaluation by three or more scientists, mathematicians, or engineers
  • Evaluation of Entry Form, any required Supplemental Forms, and supporting documents (including comments provided by teachers and supervising scientists) illustrating the student's promise as a creative scientist
  • Review of transcript, relative standing in high school graduating class, and standardized test scores
  • Semifinalists and Finalists selection by the judges, using all available evidence with greatest weight given to the Research Report

Announcing Semifinalists and Finalists

January 14, 2009: A public announcement of the 300 semifinalists is made. Semifinalists and their high school principals are notified by mail.

January 28, 2009: The 40 finalists are notified by telephone and a public announcement of finalists takes place.

A list of all named semifinalists and finalists is available on this site beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET, on the public announcement dates. Lists include each student's full name, age, school, city, state, and project title.

All students who submit a completed entry receive a list of finalists and semifinalists in late January. Additional copies may be obtained by contacting Society for Science & the Public.

Attending the Science Talent Institute

The 40 Intel Science Talent Search finalists receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC to attend the Science Talent Institute, which takes place from March 5-10, 2009.

Their week-long stay includes an in-depth interview process, visits to historic sites and cultural institutions, meetings with leading scientists and engineers, and the opportunity to display their research at the National Academy of Sciences. Students also have an opportunity to exchange ideas and insights with each other and prominent members of the scientific community.

The finale of the Science Talent Institute, a black-tie banquet honoring all of the finalists, takes place on March 10, 2009. The evening concludes with the announcement of the top ten winners of the Intel Science Talent Search 2009.
