Program Information

60th Annual STS (2000–2001)
Finalists
Cambrian Yangshao Liu

Cambrian Yangshao Liu LOUISIANA
Cambrian Yangshao Liu, 17, of Baton Rouge, developed a new method for automating the analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) images for his Intel Science Talent Search project in computer sciences. He created a computer program to identify brain abnormalities in MR images using neural networks to perform the task of white/gray matter segmentation and extract information based on neural Fourier shape descriptors. He believes the system will aid in the early detection of brain tumors and aneurysms. Cambrian is president of the student government and the French club at Baton Rouge Magnet High School and state president of the math society, Mu Alpha Theta. An accomplished musician, he plays piano and is first violinist in the Louisiana Youth Orchestra. Cambrian has earned dozens of honors including two first place ISEF awards-one for computer science and one for medicine-and a Top Ten Projects Award at the Research Science Intstitute. The son of Dr. Kam-biu Liu and Dr. Nina Siu-Ngan Lam, Cambrian plans to study medicine and computer science at Harvard, become a neurosurgeon and conduct research in neuro-immunology.
