Jerry Moy Chow

Jerry Moy Chow NEW YORK
Jerry Moy Chow, 17, of Brooklyn, studied energy levels in the quantum well for his physics entry in the Intel Science Talent Search. Quantum wells are ultratiny atomic structures being developed for use as advanced electronic devices with potential applications that include blue and violet lasers. Jerry made a series of measurements that he concludes will help to provide important fundamental understanding of such applications. His work was conducted at the Condensed Matter Physics Lab at MIT. Jerry is editor of the Stuyvesant High School science magazine Nucleus, but when he took the job the magazine was an unpopular publication available for sale to parents and faculty. Under Jerry's direction, it was transformed into a monthly science newsletter reporting the latest breakthroughs. To allow free distribution, Jerry sold advertising space to local businesses and began a new service-selling science study guides to students written by Nucleus staff members. He enjoys piano, violin, basketball, table tennis and swimming. The son of Dr. Ying Wei Chow and Kam Ping Chow, Jerry plans to study solid-state physics and engineering at Harvard for a career in research.
