Program Information

59th Annual STS (1999–2000)
Finalists
Kristin Elizabeth Kovner

Kristin Elizabeth KovnerNEW YORK
Kristin Elizabeth Kovner, 17, of Port Washington, submitted a physics project to the Intel Science Talent Search-a study of the theoretical implications of recent astronomical observations. She based her study on work she had done on the "Big Bang Theory" while participating in Michigan's State's high school honors science program. By applying mathematical modeling and computer programming techniques, she generated new data and conclusions on cosmic microwave background, the expansion of the universe, and the photon-neutrino interactions in the early universe. At Paul D. Schreiber High School, Kristin is a vocal and flute soloist with the jazz band, captain of the debate team and student council representative. She tutors in math and Spanish, and wrote a rock and roll version of Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" that was shown on Cable Vision. Honors include the NOW Women of Achievement Award, the St. John's Women in Science Achievement Award, All-County Flute, and All-County Voice. The daughter of Jeffrey and Amy Kovner, she hopes to study at Yale and is considering a career in pediatric medicine or music.
