SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH
Program Information

59th Annual STS (1999–2000)
Finalists
Jonathon Hertz

Jonathon HertzNEW YORK
Jonathan Hertz, 18, of Dix Hills, submitted an environmental science project in its third year of progress to the Intel Science Talent Search. Yoni's submission is part of a larger research effort at the Marine Sciences Research Center, SUNY, Stony Brook, to study the digestive physiology of polychaete marine worms. Pollutant processing through their digestive systems was the focus of Yoni's Search entry, and he believes his findings can be used to accurately predict the uptake of harmful contaminants by sediment-feeding organisms. At Half Hollow Hills High School East, Yoni plays alto sax in the symphonic orchestra, jazz and marching bands, and has earned varsity letters in swimming and golf for the past four years. As a National Honor Society officer, he spearheaded a computer-training program for senior citizens at the Gurwin Geriatric Center, and was the chief organizer of the Senior Citizen Prom. His science honors include a Grand Award 3rd place at Intel ISEF, and a Simon's Fellowship at SUNY, Stony Brook; his special interests are scuba diving and underwater photography. Yoni is the son of David and Gila Hertz, and plans to attend Columbia University.
