NEW YORKVincent Wai Fong, 17, of Pleasantville, submitted an Intel Science Talent Search botany study of the ability of food crops to accumulate zinc from the soil into their leaves and stalks. Zinc supplements help prevent many infections by strengthening the body's immune system. After comparing seven crops and three zinc additives, Vincent showed that a combination of spinach and zinc sulfate yielded the highest zinc concentrations with spinach accumulating at least twice the zinc of other treated plants. He believes his research could lead to large-scale production of mineral-enriched crops. At Byram Hills High School in Armonk, Vincent is a middle-distance runner on the track team, holds the freshmen record in the 400 meter dash and was last year's captain of the cross country team. His volunteer activities include work at a nearby medical center creating computer models to help doctors determine total radiation received by brain cancer patients undergoing multiple radiation treatments. The son of Jun and Daisy Fong, Vincent plans to attend Rice University in Houston to prepare for a career as a medical researcher. |
