SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH
Program Information

58th Annual STS (1998–1999)
Finalists
Michael Randolph Maire

Michael Randolph MaireMichael Randolph Maire, 17, of Silver Spring, developed a system that uses arrays of microphones to track battlefield targets acoustically, and in three dimensions, for his Intel Science Talent Search physics entry. He based his system on his own complex, mathematical extension into three dimensions of existing two-dimensional direction-finding computer algorithms. His 3D system, he concluded, proved superior in tests and computer simulations. In addition, he used computer simulations to determine how array configurations may optimize the performance of 3D scanning routines. Michael worked on his project at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Maryland, where a summer internship sparked his interest in the subject. A varsity swimmer at Montgomery Blair High School, Michael has won a number of top national academic awards in areas such as computer sciences, mathematics, space sciences and astronomy—and he reads French fluently. The son of Cyril and Catherine Maire, Michael plans to pursue a double major in computer science and mathematics at MIT.
