58th Annual STS (1998–1999)
Finalists
Daniel H. Grollman

Daniel H. GrollmanDaniel H. Grollman, 17, of Jamaica, submitted a project in medicine to the Intel Science Talent Search. He studied an adhesion molecule, called PECAM, which has a crucial role in the movement of white blood cells out of the bloodstream and into sites of inflammation—the body's natural response to infection or irritation. The research community believes that new drugs targeting PECAM can be developed to halt inflammation—such as that caused by arthritis and other auto-immune diseases—without side effects. At the Cornell Medical Center, Dan studied the molecule's binding activity in cell-to-cell interactions to determine how much PECAM is necessary for inflammation to occur. He also carried out pilot studies to test the procedure he designed. At the Bronx High School of Science, Dan is founder and president of the chess club, captain of the chess team and heads the League for Environmental and Animal Protection. He was the school representative to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The son of Amy Grollman, Dan hopes to attend Yale and enjoys music, photography, karate and camping.
