Finalists
Angela Patricia Burgess

Angela Patricia BurgessAngela Patricia Burgess, 17, of Springfield Gardens, investigated relationships between fathers and adolescent daughters for her Intel Science Talent Search social sciences project. While most studies focus on absentee fathers, Angela's deals with fathers in the home. After analyzing results of a survey of female students 13-17, Angela concluded that the father's level of education was an important factor—those with more education were more supportive of their daughters. The education level of mothers did not show a similar correlation. She also found that daughters with supportive fathers and good family relations tend to better express and feel love. An avid reader and writer of poetry, Angela is vice president of her school's Black Organization for Student Strength. She tutors other students in math and science, works with a Red Cross Youth Group and volunteers at a local hospital. A senior at the Bronx High School of Science, Angela hopes to enter the pre-med program at Emory University in Atlanta, eventually becoming a neonatologist improving health care for children around the world. She is the daughter of Hubert Decosta Burgess and Eileen Haynes.
