Program Information

58th Annual STS (1998–1999)
Finalists
Cullen H. Blake

Cullen H. BlakeCullen H. Blake, 17, of Glenmont, studied the pulsational characteristics of delta d Scuti Variable Star V0830 Herculis for his Intel Science Talent Search astronomy project. Through ground-based observations, Fourier transform analysis, polynomial regression, and least-squares fitting, Cullen determined a new period of variation for V0830 Herculis, which he believes to be 360% more accurate than previous estimates. Last October he presented his findings—considered the best data currently available on V0830 Herculis—to the American Association of Variable Star Observers. His past honors include science awards from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Yale University, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Cullen is president of the Student Senate at Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar. An accomplished musician, he plays French horn in the school orchestra, marching band and wind ensemble, as well as the Empire State Youth Orchestra. The son of Thomas and Mary Blake, he plans to study astrophysics at Princeton.
