Program Information

58th Annual STS (1998–1999)
Finalists
Seth Ament

Seth AmentSeth Abrams Ament, 18, of Falmouth, studied the mating system of the common European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, for his biology entry in the Intel Science Talent Search. Seth's research was conducted at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass., where he constructed an aquatic tank with flow-through seawater for the observation and filming of twenty cuttlefish matings. From beneath the tank, Seth recorded mating behaviors with a high resolution digital video camera. His subsequent analysis, in terms of sperm competition, provided new information on the process and formed the basis of what is expected be a co-authored paper in a biological journal—his second. In addition, excerpts from his video footage were used by the Discovery Channel in its special, "Mysteries of the Sea." At Falmouth Academy, Seth is co-captain of the varsity soccer team and recipient of the All-School Award for Distinction in Mathematics. An accomplished musician, he has played with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony for the past five years and is principal cellist of its chamber orchestra. The son of Robert and Dr. Alison Ament, he plans to attend Harvard.
