A Photo Journal

of the

1998

The Westinghouse Science Talent Search is in its 57th year. Society for Science & the Public staff has been working since the November 24, 1997 deadline to process and prepare the 1,500 + entries for the evaluators and judges who volunteer their time to review the entries. Ultimately 300 semi-finalists and 40 finalists are selected. What follows are a few pictures of the judges at work. We hope to add to this photo journal as the 57th Westinghouse Science Talent Search continues. Look back for a list of the semi-finalists and photographs of the 40 finalists who will come to Washington, DC for a week in March to compete for scholarship monies totaling $205,000.

One thousand, five hundred and eighty-two entries were received by the
November 24, 1997 deadline.

The Judges pause for a group photo. From bottom left to right: Dr. Hynda Kleinmas, NIH;
Dr. Ida Owens, NIH; Dr. Richard Gott, Chairperson, Princeton University; Dr. Stuart Hauser,
Harvard Medical School. Top left to right: Dr. Larry Washington, University of Maryland; Dr. Philip DeShong, University of Maryland; Dr. Andrew Yeager, Emory University; Dr. Harold Amos, Harvard Medical School. Not shown: Dr. Charles Schwartz, Univ. of Maryland.

The judges are provided with approximately the top third of the papers as ranked by 38 evaluators, at least two of which have fully reviewed each paper. From this pool of papers, the nine judges read, evaluate, and discuss the entries to determine the 300 semi-finalists and the 40 finalists.
