Science News Awards

Science News, and the family of its publications including Science News for Kids and Science News Prime, are a vital element of the science community and a key component of the Society. Published since 1922, Science News is a biweekly print publication reaches over 120,000 dedicated subscribers in print and digital formats. Updated continuously online, ScienceNews.org attracts nearly ten million online viewers annually.  Due to the high caliber of the magazine's writing and design, Science News has been the recipient of multiple awards.

2013 Newsbrief Awards of the DC Science Writers Association
  • Honorable Mention- Meghan Rosen, Staff Writer, for her July 2012 story, "All Dinosaurs May Have Had Feathers."
  • Honorable Mention- Susan Milius, Life Sciences Writer, for her October 15, 2012 "Bees More Cuckoo than Birds" from her "It's Alive" column, available exclusively in Science News Prime.
2012 Eddie and Ozzie Awards
  • The Science News family of Publications recently won three Eddie and Ozzie Awards from Folio: Magazine. Science News won Bronze in the Best Series of Articles category for its “Consciousness” series, Silver in the Best Cover category for the “Drool” issue (November 2011), and Silver in the Best Standalone Digital Magazine category for the April 30, 2012 issue of Science News Prime. The Awards honor editorial excellence and magazine design.
2012 Media Industry News Editorial & Design Award
  • Science News won a 2012 Media Industry News Editorial & Design award for coverage of the Higgs discovery. The award recognizes excellence in content and design among consumer and business-to-business media brands.
2012 David Stolberg Meritorious Service Award
  • Janet Raloff, Senior Editor at Science News, received the 2012 David Stolberg Meritorious Service Award from the Society for Environmental Journalists. This annual award honors exceptional volunteer work by an SEJ member.
American Meteorological Society's 2013 Award for Distinguished Science Journalism in the Atmospheric and Related Sciences
  • Science News Contributing Editor Alexandra Witze recently won the 2013 Award for Distinguished Science Journalism in the Atmospheric and Related Sciences for her article, "Rivers in the Sky" in the February 26, 2012 issue of Science News.
Endocrine Society Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism
  • Science News writer Nathan Seppa was selected to receive the 2012 Endocrine Society Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism for his article, "The Power of D," in the July 16, 2011 issue of Science News.
DC Science Writers Association Newsbrief Award
  • Science News writer Nadia Drake recieved the Newsbrief Award for her story "Iapetus Gets Dusted" (August 13, 2011) and honorable mention for "Fruit of the Loo" (September 10, 2011).
  • Science News writer Rachel Ehrenberg also recieved an honorable mention for "Hidden Daliance Revealed by X-Rays" (March 31, 2011).
