Richard Fox - 2010 Fellow

Rich Fox has been a forensic educator for seventeen years, and currently teaches forensic science at Charlestown High School in Boston, Massachusetts. Over the course of his career, Fox has received training at some of the finest scientific facilities in the country, including The Human Remains I.D Lab, Oak Ridge National Labs, the Human Genome Project and the McCrone School of Microscopy.  He has assisted with the identification of remains from mass graves in Bosnia and is a member of the International Association for Identification.  Fox has taught at secondary schools in Las Vegas and Boston, the Johns Hopkins Center for Gifted Youth, and Tufts University. Many of his students have gone on to pursue various forensic related careers.  He is currently collaborating with professionals to design and build a state of the art forensic facility in Boston, Massachusetts that will be used to train high school students in forensic and biotechnology laboratory techniques.

Charlestown High School has the most comprehensive high school forensic lab in the state of Massachusetts. Extensive fundraising efforts have resulted in donations and grant monies totaling over hundreds of thousands of dollars, including this grant from Society for Science & the Public. Fox’s students have been featured in numerous features by The Wall Street Journal, Las Vegas Review Journal, CCSD Insider and The Boston Educator. Students have also appeared on major news networks in Boston and Las Vegas, including The Fox News Channel, CBS, Channel 13 Eyewitness News and KCVB in Boston. Collaborations with the Boston Police Department and Massachusetts General Hospital have provided his students with opportunities for “real science” internships.  In order to attract students, the forensics program was promoted through a variety of outreach efforts including forensic workshops for gifted and talented elementary students, inner city middle school students, and a wide variety of civic groups.
