Kathleen Dwyer has taught in the St. Louis area for the past eleven years. Dwyer has a Master’s Degree in Science Education from Southern Illinois University, a Master’s degree in Zoology from Ohio University, and National Board Certification. Using her experiences teaching in India, studying tropical ecology in Belize, cheetah conservation in Namibia, and community-based conservation in Kenya as inspiration, Dwyer seeks to help students understand other cultures and to connect students with citizen science projects. She currently teaches Chemistry, AP Chemistry and Science Research. In addition to teaching, Kathleen enjoys conducting professional development workshops, with a special emphasis on cooperative learning, critical thinking and active engagement. She and her husband are active in local community theater where they direct, act and design. They have two daughters, two sons, two dogs, and two cats—and too much fun with all of them. Kathleen enjoys collaborating with other highly motivated teachers from around the world who share her passion for science, reasoning and research.
Dwyer teaches at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in Maplewood, MO. As a Society for Science & the Public Fellow, Dwyer encourages her students to participate in independent research and science competitions. Her students perform research and compete at the St. Louis Honors Science Fair, Junior Science Engineering and Humanities Symposium, Missouri Junior Academy of Science Symposium, Missouri State Great Science Debate, Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering Academic Competition and Science Olympiad.
