Anne Artz has served as an educator for 24 years, and currently teaches Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Student Government at the Preuss School. Artz also serves as the chair of the science department and is a member of the school technology committee. During her summer vacations, Artz seeks out opportunities that will make her a better teacher, including the NOAA Teacher At Sea program, where she spent two weeks on the Atlantic Ocean surveying clams. This summer she looks forward to participating in an online ecology program with the Wildlife Conservation Society, and next summer plans to go abroad to Brazil with Teachers for Global Classrooms, where she will study how science is taught abroad.
The Preuss School is a charter school for students from 6th to 12th grade on the University of California- San Diego campus. The school’s mission is to provide a rigorous curriculum to low income students who represent future first generation college students. At Preuss, 100% of students graduate high school and more than 90% are accepted to a 4 year college or university.
Artz’s research program reaches out to 25 students, who use equipment purchased through funds from Society for Science & the Public to design and perform original scientific research. Her students have participated in the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, and hope to attend the state science fair in 2013. The first year of Artz’s research program was devoted to oceanography and marine science. The second year was focused on biotechnology and lab skills. Artz’ students have selected to study Forensic Science in 2012-2013, her third year as an SSP Fellow.
In her free time, Artz enjoys gardening, reading, and training for marathons and triathlons.
