Raymond Nance grew up in Carlsbad, NM, and received a Bachelor of Science from Wayland Baptist University and a Master of Science from the University of Northern Colorado. Prior to entering the teaching profession, Nance worked in oil and gas as a mud-logger, well-site geologist and production technician. At the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, near Carlsbad, NM, he held the positions of geo-technician and associate engineer. Currently, Nance teaches pre-engineering and robotics at The ASK Academy, a STEM charter school in Rio Rancho, NM. He recently completed his 22nd year of teaching, and is currently a doctoral student within the Teacher Education Department at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
When he began the Society for Science & the Public Fellowship, Nance taught at Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad, NM, and his research program encouraged older students to perform original research and to mentor younger students. Nance now teaches at the The ASK Academy, a STEM-focused charter school in its third year of existence. The ASK Academy strongly emphasizes engineering, so Nance has adapted his research program to include engineering, robotics, and design. Just as in his former school, Nance asks older students to mentor younger students, and expects his program to expand.
