Mario Godoy Gonzalez- 2011 Fellow

Mario Godoy-Gonzalez earned his Bachelor’s degree in English as a Foreign and Second Language from the Universidad de Chile, Arica and a Master’s degree in Curriculum Development from the Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile.  He joined the Royal High School staff in 1994, and since then, has been responsible for the initiation of several innovative activities for the ELL/Bilingual/Science Program. Mario considers himself to be a life-long learner.  He has spent every summer, since 1995, participating in professional development courses and workshops that have taken him to several states across the country and countries around the world.  His professional development experiences have taken him to MIT, the University of Utah, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Central Washington University, and the University of Washington among others. He has returned to his high school uniquely motivated and rekindled, eager to share the new experiences with his students and colleagues.

As a Society for Science and the Public Fellow, Godoy-Gonzalez’s main approach to teaching is to use science across curriculum to help students acquire or develop reading and writing skills as well as science knowledge and lab competence. Currently, he is the advisor of the school’s Robotics, Pre College SACNAS, and SMART Teams, as well as the liaison for the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research’s (NWABR) Student BioExpo. Last year, thanks to a grant from the Society for Science and the Public, he began an after-school activity that focuses on scientific research, the Royal STEM Academy.
