Chris Campbell began his teaching career in 2000 as a 5th grade teacher in Simsboro, Louisiana. Campbell has taught Math, Physical Science, and Algebra I, and currently teaches middle school Life and Earth Sciences at Simsboro High School. He coaches cross-country and track, 7th-12th grade Science Olympiad, and is planning to start a robotics competition team. Campbell received a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2004 and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Education in Administration from Louisiana Tech. He participated in Louisiana Tech’s Graduate K-12 and Research Experience for Teachers, then served as a site coordinator for this program from 2008-2010, and as an ambassador for the Louisiana Alliance for Simulation-Guided Materials Program. Campbell also serves on the National Science Teachers Association Council as the District VII (Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi) Director. Campbell is currently in Washington, DC working at the National Science Foundation as an Einstein Fellow.
Simsboro High School enrolls around 500 Kindergarten through 12th grade students. More than 71% of students at Simsboro High School are eligible for free and reduced school lunches. In 2012, for the first time in five years, two students from the school qualified for the state science fair.
Campbell’s middle school students have pursued research partnerships with professors from Louisiana Tech in computational materials modeling and cell culture studies and with scientists in the Louisiana wetlands. They have also visited the Coastal Education and Research Facility in New Orleans to form partnerships for new research projects. With funds from Society for Science & the Public, Campbell has equipped his classroom with lab and robotics equipment, probes, and science fair awards and materials. His goal for the past year was to raise awareness of STEM competitions, like science fair and Science Olympiad. Moving forward, his main objective is to involve other STEM teachers in his program so that more students can participate.
Campbell enjoys spending time with his wife, swimming, coaching, wrestling, dancing, and reading to his children - 3 boys and 1 girl, ages 4 to 13.
