1 - Program Manager-Middle School Program

Background:

Founded in 1921, Society for Science & the Public is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement: to inform, educate and inspire.

SSP publishes the award-winning Science News, and Science News for Kids, reaching millions of readers online and in print each year. It also offers outstanding education programs for students:

  • Intel Science Talent Search (STS)
  • Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) and
  • The SSP Middle School Program

Programs and publications are supported by new initiatives in outreach and membership.

Program Manager

The Middle School Program Manager reports to the Director of Science Education Programs (SEP). In this position, the Manager serves as the lead planner and administrator for the MSP, a middle school program re-launching in 2010-11 with a new title sponsor.

Primary Responsibilities

Core duties include:

  1. In coordination with the Director of SEP, develop and administer the program including coordination of staff on the annual calendar, application and entry process, program publications, major announcements and week-long final events.
  2. Lead the sponsorship relationship, including development, planning and reporting to the corporate sponsor.
  3. Coordinate communication efforts to promote the program with emphasis on building new partnerships to further program reach, as well as publicizing the program to new audiences.
  4. Maintain information, timely fulfillment of inquiries/requests, and processing of annual program awards. This can include handling of confidential documents and projects, maintaining the confidentiality of the selection process with students, parents, teachers, the press and the public.
  5. Coordinate with the Events Director and other key staff to direct the finalist week activities including the student activities, public exhibition of projects and final award ceremony.
  6. Support for other SEP programs and potential coordination with SSP outreach efforts.

Qualifications

  1. At least 3 to 5 years experience as a manager; relevant experience in education and familiarity with education application processing (college or university).
  2. Previous management of a sponsored program or lead on a sponsorship relationship is most desirable.
  3. Outstanding communication skills including ability to communicate verbally and in writing about sensitive matters.
  4. Experience with external communications, including working with media, elected officials, and the education community of parents, teachers, and students.
  5. Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree is desirable. Focus in science or education preferred.
  6. Computer proficiency including:
    1. Word Processing
    2. Excel
  7. Demonstrated ability to work with others as a team.
  8. Attendance at all SEP programs, which requires at least 2 weeks of travel annually.
  9. Affinity for the education and science goals of SSP.

Internships

1 - Science News Internships

Science News, the award-winning magazine covering all fields of science for a general readership, is now accepting applications for its science writer internships.

Interns work as full-time science writers under the guidance of Science News editors and writers. Based in Washington, D.C., Science News reports scientific findings and trends occurring worldwide. Interns generate many of their own story ideas, reporting and writing several articles per week, including news stories and longer features.

Former Science News interns have gone on to staff positions with the New York Times, the Washington Post, Science, Nature, Health, NOVA, Discover, Popular Science, U.S. News & World Report, Scientific American, ABC television, the Associated Press, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Science News, among others.

The internship is intended for people planning careers in science writing and is offered three times a year for at least a three-month stay within the following periods: spring (January to April), summer (May to August) and fall (September to December). One applicant will be selected for each period. Preference is given to people completing an advanced degree in journalism with an emphasis in science writing. Skilled writers working toward an advanced degree in one of the sciences and experienced journalists in transition to a science specialty are also considered. Interns receive $1,890 per month.
